If there’s one thing that a quick look at the current state of television and movies will tell you, it’s that there’s not much need for original ideas when there’s so much out there ready and waiting to be adapted, updated or just outright ripped off. That’s why we’ve decided to help in that process with a series which offers up some of the things we’d like to see being brought to big screen or small. This week’s suggestion? Red Dwarf.
A thought occurred to me the other day: Where are the science fiction comedies? With genre crossover seeming to be one of the few ways in which genres seem to move forward in this age of big budget blockbusters dominating the movie landscape – and, to some extent, the television landscape as well, just by dint of being so important to mainstream pop culture – you’d think that special-effects-laden SF and high concept comedy would be an immediate and obvious hit with audiences, and yet… there aren’t really any. Isn’t science fiction funny?
Take a bunch of random people, stick them on a space ship and make sure that they have no way of getting home any time soon, and definitely not without some level of discomfort and entertaining – to other people, of course – adventures. Yes, it’s a classic TV trope, and one that keeps producing greatness. Welcome to the five best lost-in-space shows.
