2013 sees at least two movies promising the end of the world (Comedies This Is The End and The World’s End), but also two movies set after the apocalypse (Oblivion and After Earth). It’s a year that has remakes of horror classics (Evil Dead, Carrie), sequels galore (New installments of The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Kick-Ass, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and, of course, GI Joe: Retaliation) and a relaunch for Superman himself with Man of Steel. In other words, it’s a pretty packed year. But which of the movies due for release next year are you most excited about?
Although the opening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is still a week away, New Line is already teasing the next installments of Peter Jackson’s trilogy with the first images from The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again.
Among other character portraits and behind-the-scenes stills, the Hobbit Movies app has released our first look at Lee Pace as Thranduil and a tease as to where the split between An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug will take place.
Following the expansion of Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Hobbit to a trilogy, the second chapter will be titled The Desolation of Smaug, with the conclusion now called There and Back Again. The final film will open July 18, 2014.
